To paint rocks you can use for fundraising, first, get some rocks! These are sold in big bags at home improvement stores and landscaping stores.
At craft stores, you'll find the right kind of paint. I like Ceramcoat paint.
For details, like the dots and the eyes, I use fabric paint. All these other supplies are also available at craft stores.
You can really have a lot of fun with these rocks. You can use tacky glue to apply plastic jewels, glitter, just about anything you like that would look good!
A nice assortment of brushes is good to have. You can clean them with water when you're done painting for the day.
These arty paint pens are handy for detail work.
These Sharpie pens are handy for finishing the eyes, and making other marks you might need on the rocks.
To get started, just pick a rock, make sure it's clean and dry (I rinse them the day before and let them dry), and pour a little paint in an old cup.
Once you have a design in mind, put on the first coat. For my ladybug rocks, I leave an empty space for the face.
Let the paint dry before you put on the second coat. I always do a bunch of rocks at the same time so I can do, like 30 or so, and then let them dry.
After the second coat dries, I squeeze out some fabric paint to make a design on the rock. Don't forget to let it dry!
I use different colors of fabric paint for different parts of the rock. Here, I'm adding the eyeballs.
When the eyeballs dry, I use the Sharpie pens to finish the eyes by making little dots on the white eyeballs, giving each rock its own personality!
There's no limit to how many different designs you can create! It's so much fun to see how everybody likes different designs.
Now you'll need a bucket for the money, and it helps to explain what you're doing, and why. Then just ask local businesses if you can leave the rocks in their stores!
I put my rocks in coffee houses, ice cream parlors - anywhere people will see them! Then I just pick up the money and replace the rocks every week or so!
I also like to go to events and sell the rocks myself! I go to swap meets, synagogue and church festivals - just about anywhere! Bring a friend and have fun!
Lots of kids like to paint rocks for Darfur. Whenever I can, I teach other kids how easy and fun it is to paint rocks and sell them to raise money for solar cookers!
